Blog Post #3: People should be more like cats

After reading through the Functional Roles of Group Members worksheet, I realized that all of my major skills were the ones that are a leadership role. Throughout AP Language and Composition, there were many times where I had to step up and become a leader to help my group complete a task. Since then, that's what I have been good at. The task role that I can relate to the most is the Initiator/Contributor which contributes ideas and suggestions; proposes solutions and decisions; proposes new ideas or states old ideas in a novel fashion. The first fairy tale that came to my mind was Aladdin. The main thing a lot of people get out of Aladdin is that a guy uses a genie to get a girl. However, I do not think that that is the moral of the story. What I got out of that movie was, a girl named Jasmine was being forced to marry someone by her 18th birthday and she was completely against that. Instead of just listening to her father and doing what he told her to do, she stood up for herself and refused to marry some stranger she didn't know. By the end of the movie, she even ended up changing the law that said she HAD to marry a prince. Jasmine is who I see myself as. I will stand up for what I believe in and try to make things right and fair. I think that is very important in a group because you have to make sure your opinion is heard and that you are okay with everything going on while still respecting other people's opinions.
Another story that I could relate to was The Legend of Slappy Hooper. Slappy Hooper was the worlds best sign painter but everything he painted was so realistic that it scared people. Eventually, he found something to do with his talent and he ended up enjoying it. It is hard trying something you have never done before because it is uncomfortable and you don't know how to feel about it at first. That's why it is important for you to be open to new ideas in a group setting because you are working with other people who don't always share the same views as you.
